Entertaining a toddler can be easy or hard depending on your level of creativity and patience for their odd interests. A bag of rice may hold their attention for 20 minutes, while the $50 toy sitting in the corner only makes them cry. My baby’s favorite toy is still a tupperware container despite various attempts to sway him with Fisher Price’s newest gadget.

In the end, you still want to expose them to new wonders and watch them discover something for the first time. When my friend suggested an edible finger paint get together, I was definitely excited for the outdoor activity. This was my little one’s first paint experience and I must say, it was an adorable act to watch.

The paint itself was as simple as can be – yogurt mixed with unsweetened Kool-Aid! If you’ve got a toddler that can’t handle dairy (or are just plain short on time), you can order a safe and organic, dairy-free, wheat-free set of edible finger paints online.

We taped large sheets of paper down to the deck to preserve our toddlers’ creations, but you could also just let them go at it with the paint on top of a tarp or inside their baby pool. The paint was able to be hosed off the deck though, so it ended up being a great place to work.

Once you’ve got your location set, just scoop out big blobs of the paint and let them go to town!

This activity got messy, so I would definitely recommend just stripping them down to their diaper. Not only will it save you the mess on their clothes, but it was much easier to just hose them off afterwards. We also let the little guys play with their water table afterwards, which was a great way to get them cleaned up (thank God for water tables – they both love them!).

I won’t lie, the activity itself didn’t last forever, but it was so cute to watch. My little one really got into it and was determined to spread the paint as far as it would go. In the end, it was a great afternoon with really great memories and some awesome photos that will last forever – and now I can say that my baby is a painter!
