If you’ve already heard of Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, then you probably don’t think I’m crazy. Otherwise, I imagine you’re wondering why the heck you should spend your time reading a book about “tidying up.” Either way, I PROMISE you will absolutely love this book. While it is certainly 100% about cleaning up, it somehow manages to also be a truly inspirational book that promises to transform your life (i.e. by tidying up your home you will ultimately tidy up your problems).
I know this sounds ridiculously corny, so I’m hesitant to even write an entire post about it, but I’m telling you – this one simple activity is how my husband and I have (and are) achieving all of our dreams in record timing. It’s why I’m able to stay at home with my son, how we bought two investment properties, are learning a second language, have spent our summer traveling, have become vegan, the list goes on and on…
So here’s the really simplistic, dumbed-down gist of how we’ve made it all happen: Every few months (if we’re lucky, weeks), we sit down and formally Goal Set. I’m emphasizing formally and capitalizing Goal Set on purpose – it’s that big of a deal and that big of an event for us…it’s better than a date night (actually, we love it so much that it basically is a date night). But most importantly, it consistently and reliably always works – sometimes it’s scary how much so.
So here’s what we do, and how you can (and should) do it too:
If you’re looking for documentaries about the food you’re eating, you’ve come to the right place! But be forewarned, after you’ve seen these, you’ll never be able to eat the same way again! Luckily, that will most likely be for the better. Happy watching 🙂
I’m a total documentary junkie, so when I come across a good one that I love, I typically do what I can to find more like it. That is exactly what happened after I watched one of these (I’ve watched them each a few times so I can’t even remember which one was the first!). The greatest part about these specific documentaries is that they are bound and determined to very, very seriously change the way you eat. I’m not exaggerating – there’s just no way you can’t be affected by the messages in these movies.
So…if you’re looking for a way to jump start a diet, make a lifestyle change, lose weight, or are just in need of filling your Netflix queue, watch. these. documentaries. I’m telling you, you will be thinking differently once you’re done!
So our taxes have been filed and I’m waiting, waiting, waiting for our money. I have SO many things that I want to do with it! As I wait, I’ve of course been making a list of all of the things I’d like – and I figured, why not make a list of all of the things that everyone should have? Not just stuff, but the items that end up being a truly amazing lifestyle upgrade.
So here it is! Some of these I know from experience, some I’m just hoping will be as amazing as I imagine.
I am completely convinced that we each have the ability to make our own luck. Sure, there’s an element of random chance, but you also have to be at the right place, at the right time – and that we have more control over than we think. You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket, right?
So how, exactly, do you make your own luck?

Last year I wrote an article about staying happy while your spouse is traveling and, much to my delight, it ended up being pretty popular. It turns out I’m far from the only wife that finds herself home alone while her husband is off working afar.
My tricks for staying happy have always been lifesavers for me, but the past few months have proven to be extra challenging. My son is getting more active, but the real challenge has just been the winter and limited daylight. Getting outdoors, being active at night, and even just keeping flowers around the house can be EXTRA challenging.
So, I’ve been on a mission to figure out new ways to cheer myself up and keep motivated while my husband is away. The original list still applies, so be sure to check it out here, but if you’re still finding yourself down and out, hopefully some of these will help. 🙂
When I came across Dan Harris’ book 10% Happier, I couldn’t wait to read it. I had been working on a follow-up post to one of my previous articles (10 Tricks for Staying Happy When Your Spouse is Traveling), so the timing couldn’t have been better. I hastily added myself to the waiting list at the library without reading the full title, so I had no idea what I was actually going to be reading about when my turn finally came. (more…)
